Memorable Farewell For Rocky Hill Wrestler On Senior Night

ROCKY HILL, CT — Jordan Glover grabbed the leg of his opponent from Enfield High School, took him down and covered him as the referee slapped the mat, signifying a pinfall victory for the Rocky Hill wrestler on Senior Night Wednesday.

The opponent, junior Noah Bonini, did not lament his loss, but rather celebrated the fact he was able to help provide a memorable final home appearance for Glover, who has Down syndrome. Grapplers from both teams pounded on the mat throughout the contest, demonstrating genuine enthusiasm in the spirit of the moment.

Members of the Enfield coaching staff were approached by Rocky Hill coaches prior to the meet, asking if anyone would be willing to take to the mat with the young man in an exhibition match. Paul Meyers, head coach of the Terriers for the past five years, said the program has been able to provide opportunities for Glover to perform at nearly every home meet this season.

"This young man is so dynamic and full of so many abilities," Meyers said. "Plus, this community and school are what I describe as 'Fantasy Island' - we have the most amazing, supportive teachers, parents and administrators."

Bonini had no qualms whatsoever about taking the "loss," instead embracing the opportunity.

"I felt good about what I did in that match," Bonini said Thursday. "I thought about it after and this experience will stick with me, and this match probably gave me the best teaching point of wrestling."

Eagle head coach Jay Flynn said, "The beauty of our sport is we can set up special things like that. Our kids care about their teammates and care about other kids, and Noah is one of those. He was more than happy to take the opportunity to do this for the young man."
