Rocky Hill 11-year-olds Improve To 2-0 In District 7 Pool Play
Locals are hoping to claim district title this year after winning it as 9-10-year-olds last year.
So far so good for the Rocky Hill Little League 11-year-old All-Star Team.
After winning its first game 14-2 over Wethersfield, Rocky Hill recorded a mercy rule 10-0 win in four innings over Newington Monday night at Volunteer Field in Newington.Â
Most of the team was part of the District 7 9-10 championship team from last year
Pitcher Justin Barron started the game off right for the Rocky Hill club. After he wiggled his way out of a two on, no out first inning on the mound, he hit a three-run home run to put Rocky Hill up 3-0 after one inning.Â
Rocky Hill added three more runs in the bottom of the second inning and never looked back in winning it 10-0.
"It's almost the same team I had last year but we're missing our number one pitcher from that team," said Rocky Hill coach David Sevigny. "We finished second at the sectionals to Torrington so these kids have played a lot of games together.Â
"I think they're the type of team that will put the ball in play and hit the ball well. I think the pitchers will throw the ball and will get plenty of support from the defense played behind them."
Barron and Justin Fraleigh are the co-number one pitchers. Fraleigh catches when he is not pitching and Barron plays first.
The top of the line-up is led by Brian Brownstien and Matt Sevigny. Justin Marshall is the top hitter on the team and hit two rocket line drives in the win over Newington. He also plays shortstop. Barron hits fourth, followed by Fraleigh.
Ryan Boyle and Mike Guerra play rightfield and both came up with nice catches in the Newington game. Sal Lonero plays centerfield, Jack Risley and Rockwell Spalding play leftfield and Matt Simboski and Shane Dawson play third base.Â
"Glastonbury American, Newington and West Hartford were in the final four of district play last year with us,"Â Sevigny said. "I think they will probably be there again. This year is a double elimination tournament with the final four, which I think is a great thing because anyone can have a bad day."Â
The locals play three straight home games in pool play. They play Wednesday against Glastonbury National, Friday against West Hartford and Sunday against Glastonbury American.Â
Rocky Hill plays at home as part of a tripleheader this Sunday. The 9-10 all-star team will play at 1 p.m. The 11 team will play at 3 p.m. while the 12s will play at 5 p.m.Â
