Starling Physicians Take A Customized Approach to Weight Loss

- Alternatives to Weight Loss Surgery That Can Have Sustainable Results -

More than one-third of U.S. adults are obese. The rate in Connecticut is slightly lower, at one-quarter. Obesity-related conditions include heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancer, which are some of the leading causes of preventable death. The healthcare professionals at Starling Physicians, one of our state’s largest multi-specialty groups, is determined to change those statistics by taking a multifaceted approach to weight loss that can be tailored to the unique needs of individuals.

“Obesity is a globally recognized chronic disease which is associated with multiple other chronic conditions,” said Dr. Scott Walker, a board-certified obesity medicine physician and head of Starling Physicians’ weight loss program. “Starling, as a practice, has increased our focus on helping patients achieve a healthy weight which can reduce the risks of serious medical conditions without resorting to weight loss surgery.”

Dr. Walker and his team realize that weight loss is highly personal and requires a customized approach. They offer a number of options for weight loss patients including commercial weight loss programs, nutritional counseling, and use of prescription weight loss medications.

For patients who are looking to jump-start their weight loss and learn how to adapt a healthier lifestyle, the Slim Start program using commercially packaged food is a good option. In this program, a dedicated medical team helps patients lose weight quickly, safely, and under a doctor’s care. Patients meet with a Nurse Practitioner for medical clearance, and then meet regularly with a coach who motivates and educates them on crafting a healthy diet with the right combinations of carbohydrates (sugar), fats and proteins. All food products can be purchased right at the Starling office. Participants typically lose 4-6 lbs. in the first week or two and then 1-2 Ibs each week thereafter. An Obesity Medicine Physician is available for any questions or concerns at all times.

Dr. Syed Hadi, a hospitalist with Starling who also leads the weight loss program, explains, “One of the keys to success is that this program not only helps participants lose weight, but ensures that participants learn the skills needed to keep the weight off and live a healthier lifestyle. And, participants do so under a doctor’s care to make sure they are losing weight safely. Our participants have seen a noticeable improvement in not only their appearance, but their overall health.”

For patients suffering more complex weight issues, certain medications combined with the above program can lead to success. Recent research has found that Saxenda® is an FDA-approved, prescription injectable medicine that, when used with a low-calorie meal plan and increased physical activity, may help some adults with excess weight who also have weight-related medical problems (such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or type 2 diabetes), or obesity, to lose weight and keep it off.

Another option for patients is to meet with registered dietitian Elisa Marley, RD CD, who provides personal coaching and counseling about diet, food, and nutrition. She helps people make healthy eating choices and teaches them how to adapt their diets to deal with different medical conditions. Patients may choose to use her services in conjunction with medication, packaged meals, or as a stand alone service.

Finally, exercise can play a role in helping patients get in shape and maintain their weight loss. Starling Physicians’ Physical Therapy professionals are available to create individualized exercise regimens. Starling also can send referrals and get patients discounted rates at Healthtrax Fitness and Wellness Centers.

“We can have a real and positive impact on the overall health of our patients by helping them lose weight and make smarter, sustainable lifestyle choices,” said Dr. Walker. “Our customized approach to weight loss aligns with Starling’s philosophy of providing a personalized, multidisciplinary approach to patient care. We give people the options, tools, and support to help them achieve their weight loss goals using the approach that is right for them.“
