STAMFORD, CT — Bobby Valentine issued an update on his campaign on Monday, one month after he announced his plans to run for Mayor of Stamford.

In the update, Valentine, a Stamford native and the former manager for the New York Mets, said his campaign has started to build "grassroots momentum." He also released a new YouTube video, explaining why he's running as an unaffiliated candidate.

"We won't deal with the country politics — let's deal with the city governance. How do you get things done? You can't do it when there's a divide. There's no room for political divide," Valentine said. "There's no room for a party system to rule, because it's about Stamford, it's about the people, it's about our issues and it has nothing to do with the color of your tie, or the letter on your forehead, unless it's an 'S' for Stamford, that is. That's why I'm running as an unaffiliated. I want to be a part of all the people, not part of one side or another side, but for all the people."

Valentine also announced an event to engage with constituents and relive his most infamous moment as Mets manager. On June 9, 1999, the Mets and Blue Jays were locked in a tightly-contested game when Valentine came out of the dugout to contest a call on the field in extra innings.

Valentine was ejected from the game, but instead of staying in the clubhouse per Major League Baseball rules, he donned a fake mustache, sunglasses and Mets t-shirt and watched the game from the dugout tunnel. Television cameras caught Valentine in the act, and the image of him incognito is now part of Mets and baseball history.

To commemorate the anniversary, Valentine is asking residents to email him photos of their best disguises.

"Our team will be selecting several of you to join us this week as I talk about this moment on television and around Stamford," Valentine said in the campaign update email.
