The half-hour documentary, Compadre Huashayo, is produced by PBS with Latin Grammy and Grammy composer Gabriela Frank and multi Emmy-winning videographer, Aric Hartvig. The featured film is a lively exploration into South American, Indigenous, and afro-Ecuadorian music. The film will be followed by a guided panel discussion about Andean and Afro-Latinx cultures in the Connecticut diaspora with international conductor Alejandra Urrutia and Aric Hartvig. There will be a performance by legendary bomba drummer Roberto Cepeda, in his Stamford debut.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted issues of systemic inequity, racial equity and the need for change within our communities. INTEMPO will use this opportunity to bring more awareness and understanding about interculturality through music and film. Together, we look forward to helping our communities share that despite having a shared Spanish language, Latin American cultures are not a monolith,” explains Angelica Durrell, CEO and President, INTEMPO.

The grant is a larger effort on behalf of Connecticut Humanities “commitment to broadening access to the humanities in Connecticut and ensuring that the state’s communities and cultures are represented and reflected in meaningful ways,” said Dr. Jason Mancini, executive director at Connecticut Humanities. “With this film and discussion, INTEMPO is providing an opportunity for participants to explore the myriad of Latin American and Indigenous traditions while examining their own values and beliefs,” Mancini continued. “Cultural understanding can help bridge the divisiveness so prevalent today and CTH is proud to be supporting this work.”
