Mayor David Martin Gives Update On COVID-19

Martin gave the latest update on COVID-19 in Stamford on Tuesday night, as restrictions are about to ease in Connecticut.

STAMFORD, CT — Mayor David Martin gave an update on COVID-19 Tuesday night as the city is about to enter the first day of eased restrictions on Wednesday.

Martin and Dr.Michael Parry, Chair of Infectious Diseases at Stamford Hospital, urged residents to get vaccinated so that they can enjoy this new normal in the state of Connecticut.

"If you're fully vaccinated, you can now resume the activities you did prior to the pandemic. That's quite a leap," Parry said. "I think some of us are still a little nervous about shedding the mask completely, but the CDC recommendation is based upon the level of immunity we've achieved from the vaccine."

"We have three good vaccines, three very reliable vaccines, with very low risk for everybody. The benefits clearly outweigh the risks, not just in illness but in terms of mobility and activity and what you can do," Parry said. "It's going to be June soon. You want to go out to restaurants, you want to be in groups, you want to go to plays and baseball games, then you need to get vaccinated."

The Latest Numbers

According to Martin, dating back to a year ago, Stamford is now averaging 8.5 cases per day on a 14 day moving average. That number is down 55% compared to a year ago when the rate was at 19 cases per day. However, there was one death in Stamford related to COVID-19 over the past week, bringing the total city death toll to over 300 residents.

Hospitalization numbers continue to decline. As of Monday, there were 10 patients in Stamford Hospital, with zero in the Intensive Care Unit.

On the vaccination front, as of May 12, 57% of Stamford's population has received one dose.

Rates by age group in Stamford are as follows:

65-plus: 86% of people have two dose coverage, 12% have one dose, and 2% have no coverage at all.

45-64: 64% two doses, 16% one dose, 20% no coverage.

15-44: 35% two doses, 21% one dose, 44% no coverage.

Martin said the biggest challenge is getting the younger age groups vaccinated. The City will hold several pop-up vaccination events in various neighborhoods with low vaccination rates near the I-95 corridor beginning this week and next week.
