Mayor Provides Update On Stamford's Response To Winter Storm

Mayor David Martin said city crews were still working to clear Stamford's streets following a "major" winter storm.

STAMFORD, CT — The city is still working Thursday evening to clear snow from the city's roads following a "major" winter storm that began Wednesday and carried over into Thursday.

According to Mayor David Martin, a snow emergency remains in effect for Stamford until Friday at 12 p.m. The mayor noted the city received approximately 10 to 13 inches of snow during the storm, with the higher range of snow accumulation observed in northern Stamford. "Our city crews started working yesterday and are still working now to clear Stamford's streets from this major storm," Martin said in a statement. "These dedicated teams will keep working into the evening to make our roads safe, so we are asking residents to please stay off the roads until our crews have had more time to finish cleaning up after this storm. We are expecting several days of below freezing temperatures so residents should prepare accordingly."

In a news release, city officials urged residents to remain safely indoors unless they need to leave their household. The city's emergency operations center remains activated with the priority of addressing life safety issues and making roads passable, officials said.

Residents are advised to be aware and stay away from downed power lines, and to report all downed wires to Eversource by calling 1-800-286-2000. Life-threatening situations should be reported to 911, while non-emergency issues can be reported to 203-977-4444.

Stamford's main roads and arteries are now passable, but snow removal is ongoing as it continues to snow. City parking garages remain open and free of charge for the duration of the snow emergency.

Residents on snow emergency routes can continue to park at city parking garages until Friday at noon. The city has towed vehicles that do not comply with clearing snow emergency routes, officials said.

Resident concerned about unplowed roads or parked cars can submit a request through Fix It Stamford.

Garbage and recycling pickup has been delayed one day. Thursday pickup will be performed on Friday. Friday pickup will be performed on Saturday.

The Emergency Operations Center reports that Stamford saw 21 vehicle accidents, 2 with minor injuries, as a result of the weather. No power outages or trees down were reported, officials said.

Residents are reminded:

  • The depositing of snow and ice in streets is not permitted. No person shall plow or cause to be plowed any snow or ice from private property onto a city street so as to obstruct traffic or pedestrian walkways.
  • Sidewalks are required to be shoveled within 12 hours after the snow stops.
  • Vehicles are required to have snow removed from roofs before driving (preventing snow missiles).

Shoveling / Removal of Snow and Ice Ordinance

Snow is required to be removed within twelve (12) hours after snow fall or freezing, or if such fall or freezing is in the nighttime, before 10 a.m. of the succeeding day. Any person who violates this section shall be fined ninety dollars ($90) for each offense.

The Stamford Ordinance States:

The owner, occupant or person or condominium association in charge of any land in the city which is in front of, along or adjoining any sidewalk shall, after the ceasing of the fall of snow or ice on such sidewalk and after the freezing of any water or moisture thereon, remove or cause to be removed such snow or ice from such sidewalk, and if the same cannot be wholly removed, shall sprinkle or cause to be sprinkled thereon sand or other proper substance so that such sidewalk shall be safe for public travel.

If such fall of snow or ice or such freezing of water or moisture is in the daytime, it shall be removed within twelve (12) hours of the ceasing of such fall or freezing; or if such fall or freezing is in the nighttime, before 10 a.m. of the succeeding day. Snow and Ice is required to be removed within twelve (12) hours after snow fall or freezing; or if such fall or freezing is in the nighttime, before 10 a.m. of the succeeding day. Any person who violates this section shall be fined ninety dollars ($90) for each offense.
