“Arriving at each new city, the traveler finds again a past of his that he did not know he had: the foreignness of what you no longer are or no longer possess lies in wait for you in foreign, unpossessed places.”

-Italo Calvino, Invisible Cities

Lydia Larson was born in Pompton Plains, New Jersey. Growing up as an American nomad, art making was a means of documenting the constant changes of her surroundings. Ever alternating landscapes, and the deeper emotional impact of change and movement became a central part of Lydia’s sensibilities and work. In May of 2009 she received her BFA from Montclair State University where she studied under Julie Heffernan, Alyssa Monks, and Peter Barnet. She received the Excellence in Painting Award of the 2009 graduating class.

In 2011, Lydia went on to receive her MFA from Kendall College of Art & Design in Grand Rapids, Michigan. She has since been involved in residencies and research in the Netherlands, Italy, India, Hawaii, Japan, and Hungary. In 2014, she became a recipient of the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Grant.

Lydia has exhibited widely and currently lives and works in Westport, Connecticut. She is a new member of the Loft Artists Association in Stamford.

In Plain Sight reflects an ongoing body of work exploring synchronistic connection between places and events and that, which is seen, and unseen.

Her work borrows from various histories, dreams, images, memories, and tales. The paintings are in essence, little worlds.
