STAMFORD, CT — Police said a Stamford man accused of fatally stabbing his mother has been charged with murder, according to police.

In a statement released Wednesday, Police Capt. Richard Conklin said officers found Denise McLaughlin, 50, dead in her Manor Street home Friday night, around 9 p.m., with multiple stab wounds. (To sign up for Stamford breaking news alerts and more, click here.)

According to Conklin, McLaughlin's friends contacted police after they were not able to contact her for several days.

After an intense investigation, police obtained an arrest warrant for Winston George Weathers, 25, who police identified as McLaughlin's son, Conklin said.

"This tragic incident only becomes more tragic," Conklin said in a statement, "as it appears the victim died by the actions of her son."

The warrant charges Weathers with murder and he is being held on $2.5 million bail. Weathers recently lived with McLaughlin at her Manor Street residence, Conklin said.

Weathers was recently arrested by police in New York City, where he was presented before a judge late Tuesday evening and waived extradition, Conklin said. He was then transported back to Stamford and is scheduled to appear in court this week for arraignment.

"This arrest was the result of a great deal of teamwork within the Stamford Police Department," Conklin said. "Officers from numerous units worked together seamlessly to bring about this positive result."

Conklin also thanked the New York City Police Department for their work with the department's major crime squad.

"The major crime squad worked around the clock and spent many hours in New York City to take this dangerous suspect into custody," Conklin said. "In addition, we would like to thank the State Attorney's Office GA #1 and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for their help in this case."
