Stamford Mayor Announces Money, Energy Saving Project

From the Office of the Mayor: Mayor David Martin was today joined by Economic Development Director Thomas Madden, Assistant Superintendent Michael Fernandes, Special Assistant Laura Burwick, Rich Lyons from ABM, and representatives from Eversource, Con Edison Solutions, Tri-State LED, Pasquariello Electric, and Revolution Lighting to announce a new money and energy saving project. The project is replacing the existing fluorescent lights in many city schools and the Government Center with new energy efficient LED bulbs.

“Thank you to the City team, including Laura Burwick, Rich Lyons, Lou Casolo, Nancy Pipicelli, and Thomas Madden, and our great partners Eversource and Con Edison Solutions for making this project happen,” said Mayor Martin. “We are very capital-constrained, so it is important to me to find projects where we can invest capital where there is a positive return. This is an example of this. The Energy Improvement District (EID) project will save us money, provide better lighting, and reduce our carbon footprint. It’s a win-win-win.”

The Government Center and 15 Stamford Public Schools are in the process of replacing existing lighting with LED bulbs. In addition to providing brighter lighting, the LED bulb conversion is projected to save the City and Board of Education close to $900,000 annually in electricity costs.

The energy savings projected from lighting alone is about 20% of total electricity consumption in the 16 buildings contracted for the project. The total kilowatt-hour (kWh) savings will produce a reduction of 5,744,037 pounds of CO2 yearly, which is equivalent to removing more than 500 cars from the road each year.

The project should be completed this fall. To date, five schools have been completed, including Dolan Middle School, where today’s announcement was held.

We are currently completing lighting retrofits for multiple schools and the Stamford Government Center, and have been able to improve lighting levels in many locations in the district while providing a significant reduction in energy usage. In addition to saving energy, the retrofits are also lowering the City’s maintenance costs as the new lighting fixtures will have longer lamp life, meaning they need to be changed less frequently.
