STAMFORD, Conn. — As protestors stormed their way into the U.S. Capitol Wednesday, Mayor David Martin has released a statement calling the incident "a tragedy."

The incident was touched off by the Electoral College certification of Joe Biden as the next President of the United States. The move overwhelmed Capitol Police, who evacuated members of Congress as violence escalated.

"The events in our nation's capital is the result of our president and others turning honest debate into extreme populism based upon alternative facts and lies. Vocal extremists are trying to drown out the truth. This is a tragedy for America to see our democracy undermined today."
