Stamford Mayor Proclaims Tuesday 'COVID-19 Memorial Day'
Mayor David Martin has proclaimed Tuesday, Jan. 19, as "COVID-19 Memorial Day" in Stamford.

STAMFORD, CT — Mayor David Martin has proclaimed Tuesday, Jan. 19, as "COVID-19 Memorial Day" in Stamford.
According to a news release, the event will take place Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. as part of a nationwide memorial organized by the National League of Cities to remember those who have died as a result of the coronavirus. (To sign up for Stamford breaking news alerts and more, click here.)

"With the death count of Americans succumbing to COVID-19 continuing to rise, the city of Stamford is urging the community to pause and reflect on the lives that we have lost to COVID-19, this Tuesday," Martin said in a statement. "As a city, we are honored to have our city join with others around the nation, in this show of national unity and support for individuals and families who continue to be impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic."
Martin urges all houses of faith and clergy to toll their bells and all residents of Stamford to join the event from home by lighting candles or putting a small light in a window, and taking time to pray, meditate or reflect at 5:30 p.m. to honor the lives lost to the pandemic.

Cities have been encouraged to have their buildings light up with amber lights as part of the memorial. The city's amber lights for the memorial will shine on the front of Old Town Hall in the heart of Stamford's downtown area.
According to the release, a total of 247 Stamford residents have died from complications caused by the virus as of Jan. 14.
