Emerging writers retreat features award winning writer Mike Urban

April 13, 2019 (Mystic, CT) – Local author, publisher and regular contributor to Yankee Magazine, Mike Urban will be the featured guest speaker on June 8th at the next Creating A Writing Life Retreat for Emerging Writers. Celebrating its 13th summer season of empowering writers, the program is presented each year by award winning writer, Patricia Ann Chaffee and features experts in the field of literary arts.

“We are thrilled to have Mike Urban join us for our June retreat. He has such vast experience in the literary world that will interest writers working in any genre,” said Chaffee. “His career began editing at Rand McNally in the 70’s. He went on to publishing at Globe Pequot Press, and garnered award winning accomplishments as a food and travel writer, and regular contributor to the iconic Yankee Magazine. Mike has written four of his own books. He’s got it all.”

Locally people may be most familiar with his books: Lobster Shacks, Clam Shacks, The New England Seafood Markets Cookbook, and The New England Diner Cookbook. But writers who attend these retreats come from all over New England and beyond. They come from all different backgrounds and level of experience working in different genres and all are welcome.

“They may live nearby, or be on vacation, or may have come to the area for this event, seeking inspiration and to start or recharge their writing life. Whatever brings them to a Creating A Writing Life Retreat, the playing field is leveled when we gather with a common passion for writing,” said Chaffee.

This June the event takes place on Ender’s Island in Mystic. The setting is an idyllic 11 acre island in Fisher’s Island Sound (no boat needed to access), with gardens, private beach, gift shop, chapel and spaces indoors and out, for inspiring creativity. The retreats offer a relaxed, judgement free, affirming atmosphere where writers can reflect, learn, network, and leave, ready to take their writing to the next level.

The all-inclusive event is Saturday, June 8th, from 9:30 a.m.- 4:30 p.m. and includes morning refreshments and lunch. Registration is $165 per person with a $5 discount for registration prior to May 8. A second retreat is scheduled for August 17th at Mercy By the Sea in Madison where romance writer, Gail Chianese will be the guest speaker.
