Fire Boats Control Blaze On Pawcatuck River Barge

A piece of machinery aboard a barge caught fire late Tuesday morning.

PAWCATCUK, CT — A reported fire aboard a barge in the Pawcatuck River was knocked down by crew and Westerly Fire Department fire boats, according to reports.

It was first reported at around 11:40 a.m. that an "excavator machine" on a barge was on fire near the Rhode Island side of the river close to the Westerly Yacht Club.

The Washington County Fire Wire reported "crews responding out to barge in boats with extinguishers; bulk of fire knocked down."

No injures were reported. The Coast Guard was called in to survey the incident.
