Health District Will Issue Closure Orders To Violators

The Ledge Light Health District said it will issue closure orders to cosmetology establishments in violation of state reopening rules.

STONINGTON, CT — The Ledge Light Health District said that it will issue closure orders to cosmetology establishments that open illegally. Gov. Ned Lamont had initially said barber shops and salons could open on May 20, but then pushed the date back to June 1.

Ledge Light Health District said in a release that its legal team determined it "is the responsible entity for enforcing the Governor’s Executive Orders, as they pertain to regulated entities such as foodservice and cosmetology establishments who are operating in violation of the Governor’s Executive Orders."

The health district noted it will issue closure orders to any establishment in violation of the state's orders. An inspection was conducted on a cosmetology establishment when the district received word that the owner planned to open.

While no establishment was mentioned in the statement, Modern Barber and Shave in Pawcatuck had announced on its Facebook page that it planned to open regardless of Lamont's order. The shop's owner said they had invested considerable money and effort into outfitting the shop to operate.

Stephen Mansfield, director of Health for Ledge Light Health District, said in a statement: “We were notified that this establishment owner intended to move forward with opening and while we wanted to review health and safety measures with her even as we waited for clarification from the State regarding our authority and mandate to issue a closure order.”
