A Heartfelt Way to Honor Mom this Mother’s Day

ALWAYS HOME LAUNCHES A MOTHER'S DAY INITIATIVE

Mother’s Day is May 10th. This year, Always Home invites you to recognize your Mom (or that other special person in your life) while supporting those mothers who need extra assistance during these uncertain days of COVID-19.

With a donation of just $25 to Always Home, you can help a family pay May rent, a utility bill or childcare when a parent goes back to work. In gratitude, Always Home will mail a customized Mother’s Day card to the recipient of your choice, explaining that you have honored them with a gift to Always Home.

Honor a Mother, Help a Mother is an idea first introduced by Always Home’s Social Worker, Marlynn Benker. She envisioned it as a way to give a meaningful gift on Mother’s Day. “Nobody needs another scarf,” said Benker. “This is a way to show your mom that she raised you to think about others, while honoring her and her love for you.”

Always Home’s mission is Preventing Family Homelessness. In the past nine months, Always Home has already served 289 families, a more than 50% increase over the number of families served this same time last year. By combining case management support, short-term financial assistance, and creative homelessness prevention services, Always Home helps families find immediate solutions to their housing crisis and create a path forward.

Betty Smith, Always Home’s Executive Director, expects to see a surge in the number of families at risk of homelessness in the months ahead. “The business closures and record unemployment brought on by COVID-19 have devastated the finances of families across Connecticut,” she said. “Regionally, families who never imagined they wouldn’t be able to pay their rent will face evictions.” But Smith and the Always Home staff believe that every individual can help turn that tide. Smith added, “Together, we can change the life of local families and their children. Something as simple as a Mother’s Day card is one way to do it.”
