Nature Center Announces A New Nature Preschool Scholarship Fund, Open House

Every child needs nature. To help more children benefit from a natural childhood, the Nature Center will be offering a limited number of partial scholarships to the Nature Center Preschool program for the 2013-14 school year. Preschool scholarships for up to a maximum of fifty percent of the annual tuition will be awarded on a case-by-case basis, considering many factors including need and group composition. 

Applications will be accepted until September 20, 2013 for the upcoming school year and must be submitted with a letter of recommendation for consideration. To request an application, please contact the Nature Center Preschool Director at dschaffer@dpnc.org or by calling 860.536.2856. All inquiries, applications and answers will remain confidential.  

Donations to the Nature Center Preschool Scholarship Fund are being accepted and can be made at www.dpnc.org/Preschool/index.html or mailed to the Nature Center at 109 Pequotsepos Road, Mystic, CT 06355 to the attention of “Preschool Scholarship Fund.” 

The Nature Center Preschool will hold an open house on Saturday, September 7th from 10 a.m. to noon. Parents will have the opportunity to meet the teachers, take a tour of the preschool facilities and learn more about the living classroom concept, where children ages 3 to 5 develop cognitive, social and emotional skills. 

The preschool curriculum is a comprehensive blend of environmental education and traditional, play-based preschool standards rooted in the principles of the Montessori method. The Nature Center Preschool has been a CT state licensed preschool since 2006 and serves as a regional and national model promoting the lifelong benefits of connecting young children with nature. 

Guests attending the preschool open house will also be treated to a meet and greet with one of the Nature Center’s littlest bird of prey ambassadors named “Otis,” a red phase Eastern Screech Owl. 

Since 1946, the Nature Center has provided visitors and the community with experiential science programs that further the Center’s mission: to inspire and nurture appreciation and scientific understanding of the natural world and foster a personal environmental ethic. The Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center (DPNC) serves 50,000 people each year with environmental science programs. Made possible through the generosity and commitment of the Denison Homestead, the Nature Center is a private, not-for-profit organization funded by admission fees, memberships and contributions. With 10 miles of trails, live animals and a natural history museum, the Nature Center provides many rewarding recreational and educational opportunities.
