Okee Dokee Brothers, Native American Whalemen and The First Day of School!

Five things to know on Wednesday, August 28.

  1. The National Weather Service forecasts scattered showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 3pm today and patchy fog before 9am. Otherwise, partly sunny, with a high near 79. Tonght, we may see some isolated showers and thunderstorms and/or patchy fog after 3am. Otherwise, mostly cloudy, with a low around 61. 
  2. There’s a free, illustrated talk by Dr. Nancy Shoemaker that will explore the experience of Native American whalemen during the era of Herman Mellville’s Moby Dick. The talk is from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the LaGrua Center, located at 32 Water Street in the borough.
  3. The Stonington Free Library his hosting a staff-led discussion of Phillip Caputo’s The Voyage tonight from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
  4. The The Okee Dokee Brothers will close out the Mystic Aquarium’s Kidsploration Concert Series at 2:30 today. The Aquarium’s website says, “through music, discovery and fun, Kidsploration features education and discovery segments, music videos of original songs and audience interaction. Kidsploration will explore a wide range of topics from recycling and animal rehabilitation to bullying and sharing.” The performance is free with museum admission.
  5. Today is the first day of school for most Stonington students. Be on the lookout for walkers and buses!
