Oliver Porter, of Noank, inducted into Michigan's Standish-Sterling Hall of Fame
On Friday, September 15, 2017, the inaugural class of the Standish-Sterling Sports Hall of Fame, in Arenac County, Michigan, was inducted at halftime during the SSC vs. Chesaning home football game.
The inductees included Loita Molineaux who coached girls basketball at Sterling High from 1932-1958; Eric Dufort (SSC Class of 93) who played three years of varsity
basketball and is the all-time leading scorer in SSC history with 1,450 points; Marty Malcolm (SSC Class of 88) who earned eight varsity letters at SSC (2 in basketball, 3 in track and football; Kelly (Walker) Manor (SSC class of 2000) who played basketball and ran track for four years and three years respectively; Pat Norris (Standish High School of 52) who played four seasons of varsity basketball; Pat O’Keefe (SSC class of 63) who lettered in football, basketball, and baseball; the 2008 SSC Football team -

in its entirety - for an undefeated regular season; and Noank local, Oliver “Ollie” H. Porter (Standish High School class of 53).
Porter played basketball and football at Standish High School, in Michigan, where, in basketball, he averaged 17 points per game leading his team to 14 straight wins and the conference title his senior season. Porter was chosen 1st team all conference and 1st team all state in 1952. Additionally, Porter earned 1st team all conference in football his senior year.

After high school, Porter played football, as a tackle, at Central Michigan University
earning four varsity letters between 1953-1956. The team’s record when Porter played was 32-4-1. He earned all conference honors his junior and senior years. He was named NAIA Little All American and team MVP in 1956 and was selected to the All-Time CMU football team in 1969. In 1957, he received the Chippewa Award as an outstanding senior along side famous sportscaster, Dick Enberg. After graduation from college, he served in the U.S. Navy from 1957 to 1981 retiring as a Commander and he earned three Masters degrees from MIT, Northern Colorado and Connecticut. He and his family reside in Noank.
The purpose of this Hall of Fame is to preserve the heritage and tradition of athletic excellence at Standish-Sterling Community High School, Standish High School, and Sterling High School. This special honor recognizes present and former area athletes, coaches and contributors who have distinguished themselves in the field of athletics. This organization serves to inspire future individuals to perform and contribute in the same spirit.
