Pawcatuck Barber Shop Will Open, Go Against Governor's Orders

A Pawcatuck barber shop has said that it will reopen Wednesday despite state orders.

PAWCATUCK, CT — Modern Barber and Shave said it will reopen Wednesday despite Gov. Ned Lamont's order to keep barber shops and salons closed until June 1. Previously, Lamont had said barber shops and salons could reopen on May 20 with many other nonessential businesses.

Modern Barber and Shave posted on Facebook: "I will be re-opening Modern Barber and Shave in Pawcatuck on Wed, May 20th as planned with Governor Lamont’s initial reopening date with all proper precautions initially set out by the Governor: no waiting rooms, appointments only, masks and gloves, hand sanitizer and Lysol within reach at all times."

Lamont said he decided to push reopening to June 1 after hearing from many people in the industry who said they weren't ready to reopen. The decision was made Monday, just two days before salons and barber shops were scheduled to reopen.

Modern Barber and Shave called Lamont's reasoning "flimsy" and said that they've had to invest significant money and effort into changing operations to fit new guidelines.

The shop posted that it was informed by the Ledge Light Health District that they have been granted authority by the governor's office to shut them down when they open.
