Peddlers Unwelcome in Mystic, Pawcatuck

The Downtown Mystic Merchants Association supports a new ordinance that would ban peddlers from downtown Mystic and Pawcatuck.

The Downtown Mystic Merchants Association is supporting an ordinance that will ban peddlers from downtown Mystic and Pawcatuck.

According to a report in The Day, downtown businesses have complained that hot dog vendors and the like have set up in front of stores, which deterred potential customers and filled their shops with unsavory odors.

The crux of the ordinance says, “No peddler shall operate on a public sidewalk or street in front of an established business. Further, no peddler shall be permitted to operate in the downtown Mystic District and the downtown Pawcatuck District."

In other locations, peddlers are allowed to operate for 30 minutes in one location and then have to move on and they have to relocate more than 100 feet away from the previous spot.

Stonington First Selectman Ed Haberek said there may be exceptions for special events. The Board of Selectmen will have a public hearing before sending the ordinance to a town meeting vote.
