Report: Plea Deal Likely In Fatal Mystic Crash

An investigation found that both the driver Carol Belli, and the elderly couple she hit and killed, were at fault in the March 2019 crash.

MYSTIC, CT — The 74-year-old woman charged in connection with the alleged drunk driving deaths of an elderly couple she struck with her car and killed on a cold winter's night may be getting a plea deal from prosecutors, The Day reported.

Carol Belli, a retired educator from Groton, was charged by Stonington Police with driving drunk, and negligent homicide in the deaths of elderly couple Joanna and Seth Wakeman.

The Day reported the state would be making her an offer when she appears in court in late February. What the sentence would be was not reported.

Belli has pleaded not guilty to the charges against her. If she does not take the plea offer, she'll go to trial where if convicted could face a couple of years in prison.

Belli, who was denied driving privileges by a judge last summer, was charged with driving under the inlfucne. She admitted having two drinks before she struck the couple near the intersection of Route 27 and Rossie Pentway at around 8 p.m. on a late winter night. The couple were crossing outside of the pedestrian walkway. Police said Belli was driving over the speed limit and drank alcohol while on prescription medication. The Wakemans were taken to a hospital where they died as a result of their injuries.

Meanwhile, the Wakeman's estate is suing police for not handing over case reports and a civil wrongful death suit was filed.
