Stonington Crew Gets Hat Trick At Home Regatta

In its last home regatta of the spring season, Stonington Crew won a number of races.

MYSTIC, CT – In its last home regatta of the spring season, which included East Lyme, Glastonbury and Xavier, Stonington Crew won three races: The Girls Varsity 3, Boys Varsity 3 and Boys Varsity 1 events.

In the spring, schools might only race each other once before meeting again at the Connecticut Public School Rowing Association (CPSRA) State Championships, according to a release. Often the first time they face one another is at CPSRAs.

Sunday was the second time Stonington and Glastonbury paddled their shells to the starting line together.

“The spring season is short. We can’t race everyone in our league,” Head Coach and Varsity Boys Coach Tyler Page said in a release. “It was great to race Glastonbury again today. Both teams were able to gauge their progress since the last time we raced.”

Two weeks remain until CPSRA State Championships, which are held at Lake Waramaug State Park in New Preston on Sunday, May 20.

“Today’s races showed that the girls’ boats are getting faster,” Girls Varsity Coach Maria Brown said in a release. “With CPSRAs only two weeks away, we need to focus on increasing boat speed, reducing margins and closing gaps. We are headed in the right direction.”

Similar to last week’s home regatta, the final event of the day was the closest. Glastonbury held off a charging Stonington to win the Boys V1 Four by 0.5 seconds.

Next week Stonington heads to Middletown for their final dual race of the season with Middletown and E.O. Smith.
