NEW PRESTON, CT – Stonington Crew won two medals at the Connecticut Public Schools Rowing Association (CPSRA) Championship Regatta at Lake Waramaug State Park.
According to a release, 14 teams competed in 16 events. All but one Stonington boat had top-three finishes in the morning heats to qualify for the afternoon finals.
In the end, Stonington’s Girls Third Varsity and Boys Second Varsity Eights won bronze and silver medals, respectively.

“I’m thrilled for the Boys V2 boat,” Head Coach and Boys Varsity Coach Tyler Page said in a release. “All season long they have been coachable and enthusiastic. Their dedication paid off today.”
The Boys V1, V3 and Novice boats all rowed to fourth place finishes. The Girls Second and First Varsity placed fifth and sixth.

“CPSRA Championships are very competitive,” Page said. “Every stroke in every practice is critical. In championship races, boats are often separated by just seconds.”
In the case of the Boys First Varsity race, Stonington missed a bronze medal by two-tenths of a second. After 10 years with Stonington Crew, this year is Coach Ed Bockowski’s last.
“I couldn’t think of a better way to go out than with the Girls Third Varsity boat,” Bockowski said in a release. “This group of girls, most of whom have not rowed, believed in one another right from the beginning.”
The tight-knit crew improved each each week, peaking at States, to grab a bronze medal.
Results from this weekend’s race may affect seeding and qualification of some boats for New England Interscholastic Rowing Association (NEIRA) Championships next weekend on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass.
