Stonington Crew Wins Six, Builds Momentum to States

Stonington Crew won six of seven events against Middletown High School and EO Smith High School this weekend.

MIDDLETOWN, CT – Stonington Crew won six of seven events Saturday against Middletown High School and EO Smith High School. The Girls Varsity 1, Varsity 2 and Varsity 3 boats won their events.

According to a news release, Varsity 1, Varsity 2 and Novice boats took top spots on the boys' side.

“This stage of the season is about fine tuning things,” Head Coach and Boys Varsity Coach Tyler Page said in a release. “Technique, fitness, rigging, everything is fine-tuned to make our crews as fast as possible for States next weekend.”

Stonington Crew will be one of 14 programs competing in the Connecticut Public Schools Rowing Association (CPSRA) State Championships held at Lake Waramaug State Park in New Preston.

“Strong results, like we had today," Page said, "create excitement for the last week of training and build momentum going into States.”

An exciting Girls Varsity 1 race had three boats finishing within two seconds of one another. Stonington won with a time of 4:59.75. Girls Varsity 2 won in a time of 5:27.27 and Varsity 3 won in 5:31.13.

On the boys’ side, Varsity 1 covered the 1,500m course in 4:19.53, Varsity 2 in 4:31.77 and Novice in 4:46.24.

“It’s great to see our crews continue to improve,” Brown said in a release. “But there are a lot of CPSRA teams we race for the first time at States. We will need to get everything out of our last week of training to make sure we’re ready.”
