HARTFORD, CT — For more than 64 minutes of Saturday's Class M championship boys soccer match between top-seeded Ellington and No. 2 Stonington, it appeared the contest would be heading into overtime, with neither team able to find the net. Finally, with just over 15 minutes remaining in regulation time, Bears sophomore Wynn Hammond took a crossing pass from Tyler Fidrych and beat Knights goalkeeper Blake Printy for what turned out to be the only goal, propelling Stonington to a 1-0 victory at Dillon Stadium.

Bear goalkeeper Peter Fernholz earned the shutout, making several terrific saves, including a pair of leaping stops in the first half.

The championship was Stonington's second in boys soccer; the first came in 1993. Ellington was runner-up for the second straight season, and third time in the last four years.
