EAST HADDAM, CT - Two-time Tony Award-winning Goodspeed Musicals has brought together an extraordinary group of artists to contribute to the trio of exciting productions planned this season: a beloved Golden Age classic, a World Premiere folk-rock musical and a thrilling musical masterwork. Single tickets for all three shows set for Goodspeed’s 2020 season go on public sale Sunday, February 23 at 10:00 a.m.


The first production planned for The Goodspeed in East Haddam, CT will be the enchanting classic Rodgers and Hammerstein’s South Pacific which will run from April 17 – June 28, 2020 [Official Press Opening May 6]. The production will be directed by Rob Ruggiero whose past productions at Goodspeed include Oliver!, Rags, La Cage aux Folles, Fiddler on the Roof, The Most Happy Fella, Carousel, Show Boat, Annie Get Your Gun, Camelot, Big River and 1776. Rob has won multiple Connecticut Critic’s Circle Awards for Best Direction, including the highly-celebrated production of Next to Normal at TheaterWorks, where he is the Producing Artistic Director. His Broadway credits include High (starring Kathleen Turner) and Looped (starring Valerie Harper in a Tony-nominated performance). South Pacific will be choreographed by Ralph Perkins who has choreographed professionally at several regional theaters across the country, as well as many Las Vegas venues. Among his credits are South Pacific for The Asolo Rep and Paper Mill Playhouse; Hello, Dolly!, The King and I, and South Pacific at The Muny; Sunday in the Park with George at The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis and Sweet Charity at Barrington Stage. His Goodspeed credits include Camelot and 1776. In addition to his work as a choreographer, he has served as Director of Dance for the theater division at The Hartt School since 2002. South Pacific will be sponsored by Masonicare at Chester Village, Eversource, Robinson+Cole and The Shops at Mohegan Sun.

Next up will be Anne of Green Gables by Matte O’Brien and Matt Vinson. This rollicking world premiere musical based on the cherished novels will run from July 10 – September 13, 2020 [Official Press Opening July 29]. The production will be directed by Jenn Thompson, who helmed the Connecticut Critics Circle Award-winning The Music Man at The Goodspeed last spring. Thompson also directed Goodspeed’s hit production of Bye Bye Birdie and the critically-acclaimed Oklahoma! in 2017. Other credits include A Doll’s House Part 2 at TheaterWorks Hartford, Mary Stuart at the Chicago Shakespeare Theater, The Gravedigger’s Lullaby at The Actors Company Theater, and Mint Theatre Company's Women Without Men, which garnered 2016 Lortel and Off-Broadway Alliance Award nominations for Outstanding Revival as well as 5 Drama Desk Award nominations, including Outstanding Director and Revival. Anne of Green Gables will be choreographed by Jennifer Jancuska who is currently working on Broadway as resident choreographer/dance supervisor of Hamilton. As a choreographer, she is developing new musicals including The Tale of Despereax by Pig Pen Theatre Company (co-directed by Mark Bruni for The Old Globe, Berkeley Rep) and HOOD by Douglas Carter Beane and Lewis Flinn (directed by Mark Brokaw for Asolo Rep). In addition to her work as a choreographer, Jennifer is a creative producer, founding Artistic Director of the Brooklyn based company, The BringAbout and Co-Founder of Broadway Connection. Anne of Green Gables is produced by special arrangement with Justin Nichols, Eric Cornell, and Jack Sennott. The production will be sponsored by the Richard P. Garmany Fund at the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving.

This fall the Tony Award-winning gem Candide will run from September 25 – November 29, 2020 [Official Press Opening October 14]. The production will be directed by Tony, Obie, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Award-winner Darko Tresnjak. His previous productions with Goodspeed include A Little Night Music, Amour, Carnival and City of Angels. From 2011 to 2019, Darko was the Artistic Director of Hartford Stage Company where he directed numerous productions including Anastasia and A Gentleman’s Guide to Love & Murder. Darko received five Connecticut Critics Circle Awards for his productions there. In addition to his numerous productions as a freelance director at regional theaters across the country, he served as the Artistic Director of the Shakespeare Festival at the Old Globe in San Diego from 2004 to 2009. Candide will be choreographed by Bill Burns. Bill first had an extensive career as a performer– including as a member of the original cast of the Tony Award-winning Fosse when he was selected by Ann Reinking and Gwen Verdon to serve as Dance Captain for its three year Broadway run. Then, working alongside Susan Stroman, Bill served as Resident Director/Choreographer for the first National Tour of the The Producers as well as for the Las Vegas Company and the production at the Hollywood Bowl. He also served as Resident Choreographer for the first National Tour of Dirty Dancing. Mr. Burns has since directed and choreographed productions of the award-winning musical all across the U.S. and in Japan, Korea and Mexico City.

THE DIRECTORS:

ROB RUGGIERO (Director: South Pacific) returns to Goodspeed for his twelfth season, after directing past productions of Oliver!, Rags, La Cage aux Folles, Fiddler on the Roof, The Most Happy Fella, Carousel, Show Boat, Annie Get Your Gun, Camelot, Big River, and 1776. Rob has won multiple Connecticut Critic’s Circle Awards for Best Direction, including the highly-celebrated production of Next to Normal at TheaterWorks, where he currently serves as the Producing Artistic Director. His Broadway credits include High (starring Kathleen Turner) and Looped (starring Valerie Harper in a Tony-nominated performance). Off-Broadway, he conceived and directed the original musical revue entitled Make Me a Song: The Music of William Finn. The production received nominations for both the Drama Desk Award and the Outer Critics Circle Award. Rob has earned national recognition for his work on both plays and musicals. Regionally, he has directed a number of critically-acclaimed musical productions including Follies; Oklahoma!; Hello, Dolly!; South Pacific; The King & I; and Sunday in the Park with George, among others. In addition, he conceived and directed the highly successful Ella (Kevin Kline and Joseph Jefferson Awards) at TheaterWorks. His work has been seen at many other major regional theaters around the country, including Actor’s Theater of Louisville, Arizona Theatre Company, Barrington Stage Company, Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, Cleveland Playhouse, Guthrie Theater, Hartford Stage, Northlight Theater, Pittsburgh Public Theater, and The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis, among others. DARKO TRESNJAK (Director) is a Tony, Obie, Drama Desk, and Outer Critics Circle Award-winning Director. From 2004 to 2009, he was the Artistic Director of the Shakespeare Festival at the Old Globe in San Diego. He received five San Diego Critics Circle Awards for his productions at the Old Globe. From 2011 to 2019, Darko was the Artistic Director of Hartford Stage Company. He received five Connecticut Critics Circle Awards for his productions at Hartford Stage. As a freelance director of plays, musicals, and operas, he has directed at Joseph Papp Public Theater, Theater for a New Audience, Royal Shakespeare Company, Stratford Shakespeare Festival, Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Chicago Shakespeare Theater, Vineyard Theatre Company, Atlantic Theater Company, Williamstown Theatre Festival, Huntington Theatre Company, Long Wharf Theatre Company, Westport Country Playhouse, Metropolitan Opera, Los Angeles Opera, and Santa Fe Opera. After two years on Broadway, his international hit Anastasia is touring the US, and playing in Spain, Germany, Holland, and opening in Japan in 2020. Darko is very happy to return to Goodspeed Musicals, where he directed A Little Night Music, Amour, Carnival, and City of Angels.

BILL BURNS (Choreographer: Candide) For over 40 years, Bill Burns has worked as a director, choreographer and performer in the entertainment industry. He’s been privileged to work closely with many entertainment giants, most notably, Jerome Robbins, Arthur Laurents, Susan Stroman, Mel Brooks, Chita Rivera, Gwen Verdon, Ann Reinking, Liza Minnelli, Juliet Prowse, Alan Johnson, Rob Marshall, Julie Andrews, Carol Burnett, Michael Jackson, Paula Abdul and most recently, Andy Blankenbuehler.
As a performer Bill was handpicked by Jerome Robbins to perform in the Broadway production of Jerome Robbins’ Broadway and later served as Dance Captain for the U.S. National & Japanese tours of the show.
He was in the original cast of the Tony Award-winning Fosse and was selected by Ann Reinking and Gwen Verdon to serve as Dance Captain for its three year Broadway run. Working alongside Susan Stroman, Bill served as Resident Director/Choreographer for the first National Tour of the The Producers as well as for the Las Vegas Company and the production at the Hollywood Bowl.
He has since directed and choreographed productions of the award-winning musical all across the U.S. and in Japan, Korea and Mexico City. RALPH PERKINS (Choreographer: South Pacific) has choreographed professionally at several regional theaters across the country, as well as many Las Vegas venues. Among his credits are South Pacific for The Asolo Rep and Papermill Playhouse; Hello, Dolly!, The King and I, and South Pacific at The Muny and Sweet Charity at Barrington Stage. His Goodspeed credits include Camelot and 1776. Ralph also choreographed Sunday in the Park with George at The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis, as well as Urinetown and Kiss Me, Kate both of which received Kevin Kline Award nominations for Outstanding Choreography. He has served as Director of Dance for the theater division at The Hartt School since 2002.
During his time in Las Vegas Ralph was choreographer for EFX starring Tommy Tune (MGM Grand), “The Tournament of Kings” (The Excalibur) and worked with “Siegfriend and Roy at The Mirage” among others. He founded the New Works Project Ltd., a contemporary dance company based in Las Vegas and served as its artistic director for five years. For a number of years he choreographed the annual Golden Rainbow Aids Benefit in Las Vegas, earning a Toddy Awards for Best Production Number.

DESIGNERS / ORCHESTRATORS / MUSIC DIRECTORS:

LUKE CANTARELLA (Scenic Design: South Pacific) has designed over one hundred productions including work for the theater, opera, dance, film, television and commercial design. Theaters he has worked at include the Atlantic Theater Company, American Repertory Theater, Pittsburgh Public Theater, Yale Rep, Seattle Rep, Asolo Rep, Prince Music Theater, Northlight Theater, Repertory Theater of St. Louis, Rozentheater (Amsterdam), Cleveland Playhouse, Lyric Theater of Oklahoma, Goodspeed Musicals, Berkshire Theater Festival, TheaterWorks, Barrington Stage Company, Adirondack Theater Festival, CITY Theater, HERE, Synapse Productions, TheaterWorks USA, New World Stages, and many others. He has designed operas for Wolftrap, Curtis, Peabody and the New England Conservatory of Music. Dance companies Luke has worked for include The Wooden Floor, REDCAT, Sens Productions/Whitney Biennial, Hartford Ballet and the Eastern Connecticut Ballet. In addition, Luke was the associate designer for the Broadway production of Dracula, designed by Heidi Ettinger. Recent projects include All Shook Up (MUNY), Jane Eyre (Center for Contemporary Opera), Sex Tips for Straight Women from a Gay Man (Paris Las Vegas), and Follies (Repertory Theater of St. Louis).

Film and television credits include Art Directing the Emmy-Award winning series Damages (season 2), as well as work on Julie & Julia; The Accidental Husband; Synecdoche, NY; State of Play; Pink Panther 2. With his colleague Adrian Jones, he was designed display advertising for Grand Marnier/LVMH, TekServe and Smithson of Bond Street.
Luke joined the faculty at Pace in the fall of 2012 where he is currently an associate professor of Design. Prior to Pace, Luke ran the M.F.A. program in Set Design at the University of California-Irvine.

JENNIFER CAPRIO (Costume Design: Candide) her previous designs for Goodspeed include last fall’s hit production of Billy Elliot as well as A Wonderful Life as well as LMNOP and A Sign of the Times at The Terris Theatre. Her Broadway credits include Falsettos and The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. Other recent designs include Little Shop of Horrors at The Kennedy Center, West Side Story at The Guthrie and Call Me Madam for ENCORES! City Center. Ms. Caprio designed Ben Scheuer’s The Lion in London’s West End. She has designed the National/International Tours of Falsettos, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, The Lion, …Spelling Bee and Kaleidoscope (Celebrity Cruises). Other NYC/Off-Broadway credits include productions for City Center Encores!, Audible/Minetta Lane, Second Stage, Manhattan Theatre Club, Roundabout, Primary Stages, Cherry Lane, LaMama, ETC, Ensemble Studio Theatre. Over 150 LORT productions (selected): Kennedy Center, Guthrie Theater, Center Theatre Group, La Jolla Playhouse, Alley Theatre, Paper Mill Playhouse, Williamstown Theatre Festival. Her TV credits include Sesame Street (Seasons 47-51) earning a 2019 Daytime Emmy nomination for Sesame Street Season 48.

WILSON CHIN (Scenic Design: Anne of Green Gables) is an award-winning set designer based in New York City. His designs for Goodspeed Musicals include Anything Goes and Oklahoma! Wilson designed the Broadway play Next Fall, nominated for two Tony Awards including Best Play, and Martyna Majok's Cost of Living, which won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Lortel Award for Best New Play. He production designed the feature film Pass Over directed by Spike Lee, based on the stage play by Antoinete Nwandu and directed by Danya Taymor at Steppenwolf and Lincoln Center Theater. Pass Over also won the Lortel Award for Best New Play, and Wilson was nominated for his set design. Wilson designed Lucia di Lammermoor at the Lyric Opera of Chicago (starring Susanna Phillips) and won the Dora Award for A Florentine Tragedy and Gianni Schicchi at Canadian Opera Company.

In New York, Wilson has designed at Ars Nova, Atlantic Theater Company, Avery Fisher Hall, Lincoln Center Theater, Manhattan Theatre Club, Ma-Yi Theatre, Naked Angels, Playwrights Horizons, Playwrights Realm, Primary Stages, The Public Theater, Roundabout Theatre Company, and Second Stage. TRACY CHRISTENSEN (Costume Design: Anne of Green Gables) has designed numerous productions for Goodspeed including last season’s acclaimed production of Passing Through at The Terris Theatre as well as Oklahoma!, Guys and Dolls, Good News!, Something’s Afoot, and City of Angels at The Goodspeed. On Broadway she designed the revival of Sunset Boulevard starring Glenn Close, and Souvenir. Recent premieres include The Prompter (Bay Street), Anne of Green Gables, Kate Hamill’s Pride & Prejudice (Cherry Lane), and All Our Children (Sheen Center). In addition, Ms. Christensen has designed for numerous regional theaters across the country. AMY CLARK (Costume Design: South Pacific) is a NYC based costume designer whose work has been seen on Broadway, regional theaters, television, and arenas across the country. Amy's costume designs for Broadway include A Night With Janis Joplin and Chaplin (Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle nominations). Other recent designs include Follies at St. Louis Rep, Carefree Dancing with Fred and Ginger (Northeast tour), Mr. Wolf at Cleveland Playhouse, Himself and Nora at The Minetta Lane, Heathers The Musical at New World Stages, Ringling Bros. Barnum and Bailey Circus presents Legends and Circus Extreme, Chaplin (St. Petersburg Russia), My Life is a Musical at Bay Street Theater, Somewhere at Hartford Stage, On Your Toes for City Center Encores! and The Little Mermaid at Paper Mill Playhouse. Amy received the 2012 Theatre Hall of Fame Emerging Artists Fellowship and received an MFA in Costume Design from NYU Tisch School of the Arts.

DAN DeLANGE (Orchestrator: South Pacific / Candide) has scored over 50 shows at Goodspeed Musicals. His work was also heard in the West End's production of Show Boat and was nominated for Best Musical Revival at the 2017 Olivier Awards in London. He has orchestrated for Manhattan Concert Productions at Carnegie Hall, The Jim Henson Company, Julie Andrews, Rosie O'Donnell, Live Theatricals at Universal Studios, and composers Paul Williams, Jerry Herman, Harvey Schmitt, Charles Strouse, Stephen Schwartz, Peter Link, and Mark Hollman. His scores have been heard on Broadway, London's West End, National and European Tours, film, television, and at Regional Theaters around the world. He’s a graduate of Interlochen Arts Academy and Oberlin Conservatory of Music. ALEXANDER DODGE (Scenic Design: Candide) is an award winning international set and costume designer for musicals, plays, opera and dance. He has designed productions in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, London and Berlin. Alexander was recently represented on Broadway with the smash hit musical, Anastasia directed by Darko Tresnjak. On Broadway he also designed the hit musical A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder for which he received a Drama Desk Nomination, an Outer Critics Circle Nomination, and a Tony Award Nomination. Other Broadway credits include Present Laughter (Tony Award Nomination) directed by Nicholas Martin, Old Acquaintance, Butley and Hedda Gabler.

Off-Broadway his work includes Harry Clarke directed by Leigh Silverman for the Vineyard and Minetta Lane Theatres, Ripcord directed by David Hyde Pierce for Manhattan Theater Club, Lips Together Teeth Apart, Modern Terrorism, All New People, and Trust all directed by Peter DuBois, and Theresa Rebeck’s The Water’s Edge for Second Stage. Rapture Blister Burn (also Boston and Los Angeles) directed by Peter DuBois and Maple and Vine directed by Anne Kauffman for Playwrights Horizons. For the Roundabout Theatre the premiere of Ms. Rebeck’s The Understudy directed by Scott Ellis, at Lincoln Center Theater the John Guare premiere Chaucer in Rome and Observe the Sons of Ulster Marching Toward the Somme (Lucille Lortel Award Winner) both directed by Nicholas Martin. At the Public Theatre he designed David Grimm’s Measure for Pleasure directed by Peter DuBois.

He designed Rear Window starring Kevin Bacon directed by Darko Tresnjak at Hartford Stage and a brand new version of Disney’s musical The Hunchback of Notre Dame directed by Scott Schwartz for the La Jolla Playhouse and Paper Mill Playhouse as well as international tours in Tokyo and Berlin.
For London’s West End he designed All New People written by and starring Zach Braff directed by Peter Dubois, as well as the tour in Manchester and Glasgow. Internationally he has also designed at The Gate Theatre in Dublin and the Stratford Festival of Canada.
He has designed at most major American regional theaters, among them: Arena Stage, Alley Theatre, Bay Street Theatre, Chicago Shakespeare Theatre, CenterStage, Dallas Theater Center, Denver Theater Center, Hartford Stage, Huntington Theatre, Geffen Playhouse, The Guthrie Theatre, La Jolla Playhouse, Long Wharf Theatre, Mark Taper Forum, McCarter Theatre, The Old Globe, Shakespeare Theatre DC, Williamstown Theatre Festival, and Yale Repertory Theatre.

JUSTIN GOLDNER (Orchestrator: Anne of Green Gables) is an American music producer, songwriter, arranger and session musician based in New York City. His work as a performer has been featured on Grammy, Latin Grammy and Tony award-winning projects including Dear Evan Hansen and the Golden Globe winning film The Greatest Showman. He is a frequent contributor to projects by composers Pasek and Paul and Jason Robert Brown, including the Broadway musical The Bridges of Madison County. Goldner co-orchestrated the musical Deathless with composer Zack Zadek, which was presented at The Terris Theatre in 2017.
His work as producer and bandleader of Grace McLean & Them Apples has yielded two albums, combining McLean’s vocal looping techniques with organic instruments. Other notable production and songwriting releases have included folk-pop trio Saint Adeline's eponymous debut album, Cinco Paul & Ken Daurio's Bubble Boy and "Destiny", included on Hasbro's “Jem & The Holograms” tribute album.
He has been featured in other performances with Ricky Martin, Macy Gray, Donald Glover, Ledisi, Jordin Sparks, Ludwig Goransson, Matisyahu, Steve Martin, John Turturro, Allison Williams, Jane Monheit, Emily Kinney, Audra McDonald, Jeremy Jordan, Cynthia Erivo, Lolo, Elle Varner and his mentor Meshell Ndegeocello among others.

JAY HILTON (Sound Design) is pleased to continue his long association with Goodspeed Musicals. Jay has designed countless other productions at both The Goodspeed and The Terris Theatre in Chester. Over the years his work has gone on to be heard on Broadway, National Tours, and at Regional Theatres from coast to coast. In addition to being Goodspeed’s Resident Sound Designer, Jay serves as their Audio Supervisor.

JOHN LASITER (Lighting Design: South Pacific) His Goodspeed credits include Oliver, Rags, La Cage aux Folles, Fiddler on the Roof, Most Happy Fella, Hello! My Baby, Carousel, City of Angels (Connecticut Critics Circle Award), Show Boat, Annie Get Your Gun, Carnival, Camelot, Big River, 1776. Mr. Lasiter won the Connecticut Critics Circle Award in 2017 for Next to Normal at TheaterWorks in Hartford. On Broadway he designed the production of High by Matthew Lombardo. His other recent designs include 1776, Jerome Robbins’ Broadway, Gypsy, Newsies, and a many more. His lighting for theater, modern dance, ballet, and opera can be seen at numerous regional theaters across the country.

MARK ADAM RAMPMEYER (Wig & Hair Design) has designed more than 20 productions for Goodspeed Musicals, including 42nd Street, La Cage aux Folles, and Oklahoma!. As a stylist, he was fortunate enough to be a part of the Broadway productions of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, Sunset Boulevard, Kiss of the Spider Woman, and 42nd Street. Other design credits include Broadway: West Side Story, Lysistrata Jones, The Farnsworth Invention. Off-Broadway: The Toxic Avenger, Horton Foote’s Orphans’ Home Cycle, and The Milk Train Doesn’t Stop Here Anymore with Olympia Dukakis. Regional: The Legend of Georgia McBride and Christmas on the Rocks for TheaterWorks and many productions for Hartford Stage Company. He is the recipient of a 2010 Drama Desk Award for Horton Foote’s Orphans’ Home Cycle at Signature Theatre Company.

PHILIP ROSENBERG (Lighting Design: Anne of Green Gables / Candide) is an award winning New York City based Lighting Designer whose work has been seen on Broadway, Off-Broadway, in regional theaters across the country and on the West End in London. His previously designed the Goodspeed productions of Oklahoma! and Bye Bye Birdie. His Broadway credits include A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder, The Elephant Man, and It’s Only a Play. Regional theatre credits include productions for The Kennedy Center, La Jolla Playhouse, Ford’s Theatre, The Guthrie Theater, The Old Globe, TheatreWorks, Hartford Stage, Huntington Theatre Company, Chicago Shakespeare Theatre, Shakespeare Theatre Company, Dallas Theatre Center, The Alley Theatre, Arena Stage, The McCarter Theatre, Manhattan School of Music, Portland Stage Company, TACT, Barrington Stage Company, Williamstown Theatre Festival, Dorset Theatre Festival, Bay Street Theatre, Goodspeed Musicals, Two River Theatre Company, George Street Playhouse, and Westport Country Playhouse. Prior to launching his own design career, Philip was Associate Lighting Designer on over 35 Broadway Plays and musicals.

ADAM SOUZA (Music Director) His Broadway credits include Wicked, Kinky Boots and National Tours of Wicked (2nd National as Original MD/Conductor), Kinky Boots (Original MD/Conductor), Spamalot (1st National as MD/Conductor), The Midtown Men, and Les Misérables. Adam also served as Associate Music Supervisor for the international mountings of Wicked in São Paolo, Brazil, and Mexico City. His regional credits include: Next to Normal Hartford TheaterWorks, North Shore Music Theatre, and over 15 productions with Goodspeed, including Because of Winn Dixie, The Great American Mousical with Julie Andrews, Snapshots by Stephen Schwartz, Roar of the Greasepaint..., George M!, Brigadoon, Very Good Eddie, Rags, Great Expectations, and The Road to Hollywood.


Under the leadership of Executive Director Michael Gennaro, Goodspeed Musicals is dedicated to the preservation, development and advancement of musical theatre and is the first theatre in the nation to receive two Tony Awards (for outstanding achievement). Goodspeed produces three musicals each season at The Goodspeed in East Haddam, Conn., and additional productions at The Terris Theatre in Chester, Conn., which was opened in 1984 for the development of new musicals.
