Concerned relatives and friends started the page "Looking for the Todt Family." On the page, one post says the family was last seen Jan. 6.
The Todt family, who formerly lived in Colchester, still owned a business with two locations in the town, Family Physical Therapy. Reports indicate that the business was in serious trouble and that Tony Todt was under investigation.
The Norwich Bulletin reported that the family had fallen on hard times as Tony Todt's license to practice physical therapy expired because it was not renewed last year. Then the family was evicted from the house they'd been staying at in Celebration, FL.
The Todts and their businesses had debts of almost $100,000 in unpaid loans, according to The New London Day. They were being investigated by the Connecticut Attorney General's office for filing false claims.
Court documents also showed that the family had fallen behind on the home by the amount of $4,921, The New Haven Register reported.
Colchester First Selectman Mary Bylone posted the following on Facebook: "The news reports out of Celebration, Florida regarding a Colchester family are shocking and heartbreaking. While there is much we do not know at this time, I know that the thoughts and prayers of our entire community are with the relatives and friends of the family involved. We can't always make sense of moments like this but we can support each other. Colchester proves every day the power of community and the importance of being kind. I know we will stand together as we help each other to work through this moment."
Connecticut State Police said in a statement that Florida law enforcement authorities are handling the investigation: "To date, the Connecticut State Police has not received any request from local authorities in the Florida area to assist in this investigation. We are confident in their ability to conduct a thorough investigation. We ask that the public exercise patience while the Osceola County Sheriff's Department releases information as these types of investigation tend to be complex."
