The firm has listed for sale the Haddam, Conn., property where acclaimed novelist and short story writer Katharine Brush once lived.

From William Pitt Sothebay's International Realty: William Pitt Sotheby’s International Realty today announced that the firm has listed for sale the Haddam, Conn., property where acclaimed novelist and short story writer Katharine Brush once lived. Comprising three separate residences on five acres—including a main house that was featured on HGTV’s “If Walls Could Talk”—the property is offered at $1.1 million and listed with Madison agent Allison Gentile-Pollack.

Brush, an O. Henry Award-winning writer, is best known for her 1930s novels Young Man of Manhattan andRed-Headed Woman, the latter adapted into a movie starring Jean Harlow. Her short stories, including literature course syllabus staple “The Birthday Party,” appeared in magazines from The New Yorker to Cosmopolitan.

The property at 988 Saybrook Road originally consisted of a single post-and-beam main house, first constructed in 1765. The author purchased the home in 1932, moved it back from the road and added a cottage to use as a writers’ retreat. Known as Laurel Cottage, this one-bedroom, 794 square-foot bungalow sits atop a promontory overlooking the Connecticut River and Haddam Meadows State Park, and was recently completely restored and expanded.

The five-bedroom, 2,658 square-foot main residence has also been renovated in recent years, updated with luxury finishes and modern mechanicals. The third residence, a two-bedroom, one-bath carriage house, was built in 2015 and comprises 904 square feet of living space. The property further offers a total of five garages.

“With breathtaking views for all seasons, this peaceful and private compound has historic appeal, a quaint locale and unlimited possibility—including significant income potential,” said agent Allison Gentile-Pollack. “The main residence lives like a sophisticated home of the 1930s with stunning lines and generous rooms. I am excited to bring such an irresistible offering to the market.” For more information, please visit the firm’s website here.
