Barred Owl Stuck in Chimney for 3 Days
A Place Called Hope out of Killingworth rescued the scared owl.
During the evening hours of Tuesday, March 15, wildlife rehabilitators at A Place Called Hope in Killingworth received a call about an owl stuck in a chimney.
"This happens often during owl and duck nesting season if a home does not have a chimney cap installed," staff said via Facebook Tuesday night. "Cavity nesters seek out cavities and the chimney starts out looking like an ideal spot until the bird goes too deep and does not have the footing to climb out, nor the space to use its wings."
Volunteer Ned Hurle responded to the call and was successful in rescuing the Barred Owl, who had been stuck in the chimney for three days. Hurle was able to check the owl for injuries and release her back to her territory.
"Nice work Ned, and please let this be a reminder to anyone who does not currently have a cover in place," staff wrote. "Spring has sprung."
