Areas in Lyme, Old Lyme Among State’s Important Bird Areas

The state will increase its efforts to raise awareness of birds and the importance of protecting their habitat.

The state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection and Audubon Connecticut established five Important Bird Areas in the state on Monday, as reported by The Day.

The labels are meant to enhance efforts to protect the state’s bird species, according to The Day. Locations included areas in Lyme, Old Lyme, East Haddam, East Hampton, Portland, Old Saybrook, and Salem among others, which should see increased efforts to make the public more aware of birds and the importance of protecting their habitat.

The state ranks sixth in the country in regards to numbers of individuals who care about birds and enjoy watching them, so the establishment of the sites in partnership with DEEP, Audubon Connecticut, other conservation groups and private landowners is a necessity, The Day reported. A site must meet a set of scientific criteria to be considered an IBA.
