EAST LYME, CT — Re-sampling of water at Giants Neck Heights in East Lyme has shown an elevated level of bacteria, according to the Ledge Light Health District. A swimming advisory will remain in effect there until further notice.

The health district had previously found that Millstone Point Beach in Waterford had elevated bacteria levels, but re-sampling showed normal bacteria levels. A swimming advisory at that beach has been lifted.

The health district noted in a statement that "rain or other contaminating events occurring before the Wednesday and Friday morning sampling can lead to elevated bacterial counts, especially in bathing areas with storm water runoff (storm drain pipes and/or extensive impervious surfaces) or low water turnover (inland bathing areas)."
