East Lyme Repeats As State Cross Country Champions

The Vikings cruised to victory in the Class MM meet at Wickham Park in Manchester.

MANCHESTER, CT — Led by the 1-2 finish of Samuel Whittaker and Christopher Abbey, the East Lyme High School boys cross country team successfully defended its Class MM title Friday in the CIAC championships at Wickham Park.

Whittaker covered the 3.1 mile course in 16:25, finishing 13 seconds ahead of Abbey. Noah Barnhart (8) and Fred Rukundo (14) also turned in top 25 performances for the Vikings.

The East Lyme girls placed fourth in MM, led by Madison Sjostrom (11) and Gillian Goodwin (18).

Old Lyme wound up fifth in Class S boys competition, led by Nick Myers (16), Trevor Wells (20) and Thomas Pennie (21).

The top two teams and 12 individuals from each class advance to the State Open, scheduled for Nov. 2, also at Wickham Park.
