"The West Hartford Police Department is committed to the highest standards of professional conduct, and I am confident the Civilian Police Review Board will strengthen the relationship between the community and police,” Riddick said.
The Civilian Police Review Board will consist of seven civilian members appointed by the West Hartford Town Council and it will be responsible for "reviewing the internal investigation of all complaints received by the Police Department."
The ordinance also requires the review board to provide the Town Council with annual policy recommendations.
Town Council Member Carol Blanks, who chairs the Standing Committee on Public Safety, was one of the sponsors of the ordinance.
"Independent civilian oversight of police is critical to ensuring justice and fairness, especially for minority communities," Blanks said. "I want to thank the police department for their hard work on this and their continued commitment to excellence."
Town Manager Matt Hart was also positive about the review board.
"When it comes to public safety, we welcome input from a diverse set of outside and independent voices," Hart said.
