Dementia Patient Kidnapped In West Hartford Carjacking: Police

WEST HARTFORD, CT — State and West Hartford police Thursday said they have located a vehicle involved in the carjacking and kidnapping of a dementia patient in front a Post Office in West Hartford.

The incident took place at 11:45 a.m. Thursday, state police said.

An elderly woman who suffers from dementia was alone in the in the vehicle, which was left running, state police said. The vehicle was then stolen and driven around West Hartford and Hartford and, during the ride with police looking for him, the woman was left at a supermarket in West Hartford, state police said. She was unharmed, state police said.

A cell phone ping then located the car at a residence in Hartford, where state police and West Hartford police took the suspect into custody, a report indicates.

The male suspect was identified as Anthony Almedina, 41, of Hartford. He was charged in West Hartford with:

  • Third-degree larceny
  • Possessing weapons in a motor vehicle
  • Second-degree reckless endangerment
  • Reckless Driving
  • Engaging in police in pursuit
  • Interfering with an officer
  • Failure to drive right
  • Failure to stop at a stop sign
  • Failure to stop at a red light

Almedina was held on a $250,000 bond and was to arraigned Friday.
