Health Care Professionals Get Free Shave in West Hartford to End Movember

Effort to raise awareness for men's health issues.

A doctor and staff member from Hartford Hospital got a free shave at West Hartford’s The Final Cut Sports Barbershop to end their participation in Movember.

Dr. Josh Stein and Chief Strategy Officer Jim Blazar were two of a number of health care professionals who took part in Movember, an annual, month-long event in which men grow moustaches to raise awareness for prostate cancer and other male-related health issues.

“I had a cousin who died of cancer two years ago,” said Blazar, a West Hartford resident. “He was 63 and played golf and tennis. But he didn’t pay attention to the preventative measures. This gives me a chance to raise awareness.”

Blazar said that people ask him about his facial hair, which allows him to get the message out about men’s health and tell men to see a doctor and get screened.

Stein, a urologist who typically grows a goatee or a fu-manchu beard, said that he also grew a mustache to help raise awareness for men’s health.

Still, he said that he was ready for it to come off, as his wife wasn’t too crazy about his new facial hair.

Blazar, too, said he wasn’t going to miss his combination beard and mustache.

“It’s time for it to come off,” he said.
