Snow, Ice To Cause Travel Problems Thursday In Connecticut

The National Weather Service has released its first estimate of how much snow and ice is expected to accumulate by Thursday morning.

CONNECTICUT — The forecast is trending a bit warmer for Connecticut and an expected upcoming midweek storm. It still appears that everyone in the state will see a wintry mix late Wednesday and early Thursday but this is not expected to be a big accumulating snow event. The greatest concern will be ice accumulation in interior and northern sections of the state.

The immediate Connecticut coast will see less than an inch of snow and ice accumulation by early Thursday and then the wintry mix will change quickly to plain rain. Inland areas of southern Connecticut may see a couple of inches of snow and ice accumulation before the change to plain rain Thursday afternoon. Northern sections of the state are also forecast to see a couple of inches of snow and ice.

The Thursday morning commute may be a big mess statewide and could lead to school delays and or cancelations.

Southern Connecticut's Forecast Of Snow, Wintry Mix And Rain Late Wednesday, Thursday

"The precipitation moves back in Wednesday evening ahead of the warm front...As such, leaned toward a wetter solution, but some snow/sleet accumulation is possible, with icing possible as well, mainly away from the coastline. Do not foresee much of an accumulation of snow/sleet or ice near the coast, but an inch or two of snow/sleet is possible north of I-95, and a few hundredths of ice (accumulation) is possible...," the weather service says concerning southern Connecticut's forecast.

Northern Connecticut's Forecast Of Snow, Wintry Mix And Rain Late Wednesday, Thursday

A couple of inches of snow and ice is expected to accumulate in Hartford, Tolland and Windham county, while Litchfield County may see up to three inches of snow and ice.

The weather service says "Round 1 (Wednesday Night into Thursday): Wintry mix changing to rain. Thursday AM commute could be messy."

"Round 2 (Thursday night into Friday): Soaking rain with potential downpours and localized flooding. There may even be a rumble of thunder. After a mild & muggy start, falling temperatures through the day. May end as a little snow, especially in interior high elevations."

"Round 3 (Sunday): After a dry and cold Saturday, there is potential for light accumulating snowfall on Sunday. Pattern looks progressive so not looking at tremendous amount of snowfall. But confidence is low this far out."

In northern parts of the state, the weather service says the Thursday morning commute may be a real mess. Snow may begin after midnight but change over to freezing rain and/or sleet.

"The timing could be problematic for the Thursday morning commute," the weather service says, while adding that heavy rain is likely for Thursday night and Friday morning.
