Jewish Family Services, Tara's Closet Mental Health Forum Draws 600

The event hosted Jenna Bush Hager as well as a panel of experts and community members to discuss misconceptions surrounding mental illness.

From JFS: More than 600 people recently attended a community conversation organized by Jewish Family Services (JFS) and Tara’s Closet. The event entitled Embracing Possibility for Mental Health Awareness: A Conversation About Compassion & Education, with special guest best-selling author and NBC's Today contributing correspondent Jenna Bush Hager, helped bring forth a critical discussion highlighting the impact of mental illness on families, how to recognize the symptoms as well as where to find help.

A panel of renowned experts and local community members joined the discussion aimed at tearing down misconceptions surrounding mental illness: Hartford Hospital/Institute of Living Assistant Medical Director Dr. Evan Fox, local author Karin Stahl, and Huffington Post contributor/blogger Risa Sugarman shared stories about what life with a mental illness feels like to someone going through it.

Jenna Bush Hager delivered her positive message of making a difference: how the power of compassion, community support and educational opportunities change lives.

“I was proud to participate in this event organized by Jewish Family Services and Tara’s Closet,” said Bush Hager. “It is through this critical conversation, the power of compassion and community support as well as educational opportunities that we can elevate the conversation about mental health. This event meant some much to me and I loved being part of it,” she added.

“Through JFS and Tara’s Closet, we hope to begin to influence a change in perception,” said Dr. Evan Fox. “Mental illness does not discriminate, recognizing the symptoms as well as where to find help is fundamental. Showing our commitment to ensure those who need help have access to the support, acceptance, and resources they deserve is essential,” he added.
