WEST HARTFORD, CT — New parking restrictions will go into effect on select streets in West Hartford Center, effective the week of Dec. 9. The town is implementing the restrictions on portions of Arapahoe, Ellsworth, LaSalle, Pelham and Woodrow.

The parking restrictions are the result of a collaborative process with the neighborhood and the town departments of Community Development, Public Works and Police over the past year. Town staff worked with a neighborhood working group to develop measures aimed at reducing late-night parking by employees and customers on neighborhood streets in the area south of Farmington Avenue and west of LaSalle Road.

The working group reached a consensus on two parking restrictions that were then vetted by the Town Council. One restriction prohibits parking at all times on one side of the road, for certain blocks. The second restriction allows two-hour parking from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., on the other side of the road, not after 11 p.m.

Residents will be able to seek overnight parking omits from the Police Department after 11 p.m. in the same manner as the past. Parking omits would be allowed on the side of the street in which two-hour parking is allowed.

“With these restrictions in place, our hope is to encourage greater use of the parking lots and garages in the Central Business District, reduce late-night noise and lessen the congestion on neighborhood streets,” Town Manager Matthew Hart said.

Signs will be installed over the course of three weeks beginning the week of Dec. 9. Staff will closely monitor the effectiveness of the restrictions and look for any unintended impacts on adjacent streets.

“The Town of West Hartford appreciates the public’s patience as we seek to improve the quality of life in your neighborhood while balancing the demands of a very vibrant, commercial center,” Hart said.

Questions regarding the initiative may be directed to Mark McGovern, Director of Community Development, at (860) 561-7535.
