New Principal Named for Braeburn Elementary School

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Karen List announced Tuesday afternoon that Steven Woznicki has been hired as the principal of Braeburn Elementary School effective July 1. Woznicki is replacing Natalie Simpson, who retires June 30.

In her report to the West Hartford Board of Education Tuesday night, List said, "I must say I felt like I was bringing a rock star into Braeburn school this afternoon when I brought in Steve Woznicki."

Many teachers at Braeburn know Woznicki, and he had formerly worked as curriculum specialist with Simpson.

List said that Woznicki said Braeburn was the only school he had applied to, and really felt that he was a good fit there.

He will be available to meet parents and students at the Braeburn School fair on June 5.

The following is the text of the letter sent by List to Braeburn families:

I am thrilled to announce that Mr. Steven Woznicki will be the new principal of Braeburn School effective July 1. I do so with great enthusiasm and optimism, knowing Mr. Woznicki and eagerly anticipating his return home to West Hartford. I am confident he will serve the school well.

Mr. Woznicki began his career in West Hartford as a sixth grade teacher at King Philip Middle School, then moved to the Florence E. Smith School of Science, Math & Technology where he taught grade four and served as curriculum specialist. In 2005 he became assistant principal at Bristow Middle School. For the past four years he has been an elementary principal in Bristol, Connecticut. He completed his B.S. at ECSU majoring in business administration, M.A. in elementary education at the University of Hartford and 6th year in educational leadership at the University of Connecticut. Teachers admire his thoughtful, collaborative approach, specific feedback and focus on excellence. Families appreciate his open communication, listening skills, visibility, and desire for parent input. He is described as positive, knowledgeable, approachable, responsive, visionary, patient, perceptive and fair. Children “love him.”

His excitement about learning, respectful style, problem-solving skills, ability to empathize, strong work ethic and high expectations make him an excellent match for the engaged and supportive community of Braeburn School. He is a life-long learner dedicated to continuous improvement and the development of others. Please join me in congratulating "Mr. Woz" and welcoming him back home.
