Police Charge West Hartford Man With Credit Card, ID Theft

Police say a West Hartford man they pulled over for a suspended registration was charged with credit card theft after they searched his car.

WILTON, CT — A West Hartford man pulled over for a routine traffic stop was later charged with credit card and identity theft, according to the Wilton Police Department.

Wilton police stopped Karon Golding, 23, of Farmington Avenue in West Hartford, about 10:45 p.m. Thursday having suspended registration. Golding was driving a 2007 Acura TSX near the intersection of Danbury and Wolfpit Roads in Wilton, police said.

Officers searched the car after detecting "a strong odor of marijuana," police said.

According to a police report, the search revealed:

  • A plastic sandwich bag containing marijuana-like substance located in the center console
  • A large heavy duty plastic bag containing marijuana-like substance located in the pocket behind driver's seat
  • Two smaller plastic bags containing a marijuana-like substance located in the center console
  • Six letters from State of Nevada Employment Security Division that police said "appeared tampered with" and already circulated through the U.S. Postal Service on Aug. 6. The letters were addressed to six different people, all at the same address of 15 Cassilis Road, West Haven CT 06107, located on the floor of the rear seat
  • Four debit cards containing different people's names located in his wallet and center console
  • A black iPhone model A1660 with an unknown International Mobile Equipment Identity number located in between the layers of a jacket sleeve located in the rear seat
  • A dark gray iPhone unknown model/IMEI located in driver's seat area
  • $900 located in the overhead sunglasses holder by the dome light and wallet
  • A total of 1.605 ounces of marijuana.

Golding was taken into custody and charged with credit card theft, third-degree identity theft, possession of more than a half-ounce of marijuana, driving with a suspended registration, driving with a suspended license, and failure to return his license.

Golding paid out a $5,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in Norwalk Superior Court on March 3o.
