Police Dog, Trooper, 'Unharmed' In I-91 Construction Zone Crash

A West Hartford man is accused of hitting a state police cruiser in a construction zone early Friday.

HARTFORD, CT — State police said a trooper and police dog escaped a crash "unharmed" after a driver described as "impaired" rammed into their cruiser at a highway construction site early Friday morning.

The crash took place at 1:53 a.m. on the northbound side of Interstate-91 in Hartford, state police said.

A state police cruiser was inside a construction zone on the highway with its emergency lights activated, according to a crash report. Suddenly, a 2005 Honda Civic slammed into the rear of the cruiser, according to a crash report.

The driver, identified as 57-year-old Richard Harris, of West Hartford, was suspected of being "impaired," determined to be drunk, and subsequently arrested, state police said in a crash report.

He was charged with driving under the influence in a construction zone, a lane violation in a construction zone and failure of obey the signal of an officer in a construction zone, according to a crash report.

Harris was also not injured in the crash, state police said.
