Veterans Day Events and Closings In West Hartford

Details on the annual Veterans Day Ceremony and holiday closures in West Hartford are included.

WEST HARTFORD, CT — Volunteers are needed to place American flags on the 1200+ military graves at Fairview Cemetery, on Pleasant Street, this Saturday at 8:30 a.m. Persons helping are asked to bring a screwdriver or similar tool to aid in planting the flags. Anyone with a relative or friend buried at Fairview Cemetery, whose grave is not properly identified as that of a veteran, is encouraged to contact the cemetery office at 860-521-5270 so a flag can be installed there.

CLOSINGS

Municipal offices, senior center, community center and libraries will be closed Monday, Nov. 11. Public schools and school administration offices at town hall will be open. There is no delay in the collection of trash and recyclable items. The Recycling Center will also be open from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

CEREMONY

Capt. M. Patricia Murphy of the United States Public Health Service will be the guest speaker for the 2019 Veterans Day Ceremony on Monday, Nov. 11. The ceremony begins at 11 a.m. at First Church of Christ Congregational auditorium, 12 South Main Street. The event is organized by the American Legion, Hayes-Velhage Post 96. Free parking is available in the Isham Garage from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The Veterans Day ceremony includes a welcome by Moe Fradette, Past Post Commander of American Legion Hayes-Velhage Post 96, and an invocation by Rev. Dana Hallenbeck. The National Anthem will be sung by Stephanie Reuning-Scherer. “Taps” will be performed by Peter Roe, U.S. Army, American Legion, Hayes-Velhage Post 96. Patrick Harrell, USMC, will lay the memorial wreath.

In addition to the keynote address, the ceremony will also include a speech by West Hartford Mayor Shari Cantor. Three color guards will present: West Hartford Police Department led by commander Lt. Eric Rocheleau, West Hartford Fire Department led by Commander Firefighter Ryan Shea, and American Legion Hayes-Velhage Post 96 led by Commander Michael DeLuca. Sargent of the Guards is Michael DeLuca.
