Coronavirus Variants Spread As CT Races To Be Vaccinated

There are 649 cases of the U.K. coronavirus variant in the state, up from 469 last week.

CONNECTICUT — There are 649 cases of the U.K. coronavirus variant in the state, up from 469 last week. Cases of the Californian variant B.1.427 are up from 30 to 39, and instances of the Californian B.1.429 have climbed from 90 last week to 108.

Cases of the South African variant crept up two, to eight, and the number of Brazilian variant P.1 cases went from two to five.

The number of New York variant cases soared from 88 to 272. The Brazilian P.2 variant has held steady both weeks at seven cases, and a variant first detected in Africa and Europe, B.1.525, has held steady at 10 cases for two weeks straight.

Connecticut continues to rank among the top three states in the nation that have administered the most vaccines per capita. So far, 49 percent of all people in the state over the age of 16 have received at least one dose. This includes 82 percent of those over the age of 65, 69 percent of those between the ages of 55-64, 51 percent of those between the ages of 45-54, and 23 percent of those between the ages of 16-44.

The number of Connecticut students infected with the coronavirus dropped 202 cases in the past week, to 757, a 21 percent decline. The number of infections among school district staff fell 61 cases, to 91, a 40 percent drop.

Across the state 433 schools are now teaching fully in-person, 95 less than last week. There are 190 schools using the hybrid attendance model, 58 fewer than the previous week.

Where the student or staff member — which includes teachers, custodial staff, clerical, bus transport, food service and administrators — got infected is not tracked in the data. Investigations to date have shown the great majority of students or staff are getting infected in the community outside of the school, according to the state Department of Public Health
