Real Men Wear Pink program is designed to recognize the vital role men play in the fight against breast cancer. Often men serve as the primary caregiver for a woman in their lives diagnosed with breast cancer. Men are some of the strongest advocates and biggest fundraisers. They are also breast cancer patients themselves. Nationwide, it is estimated that about 2,600 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year.

Twenty men in Fairfield County, including Coughlin and Naughton, have each committed to wear something Pink every day during the month of October and help raise funds to fight this disease. They will share on social media and through their personal contacts about the importance of prevention and early detection and to statistics and the latest research.

As the world’s largest voluntary health organization, the American Cancer Society’s efforts have contributed to a 35 percent drop in breast cancer death rates since 1990. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in women, and is the most commonly diagnosed among women, after skin cancer. This year an estimated 246,000 women will be newly diagnosed with breast cancer in the United States, including over 3,200 Connecticut residents.
