Redding Nursery Employee Provides Tips for Your Autumn Garden

As summer winds down, you may be wondering what to do to keep your garden looking great through the fall.

Jon Sonnenschein, an employee at Redding Nursery, located at 73 Hill Road, had five tips for gardening this autumn.

  1. Plant chrysanthemums: Sonnenschein said the fall flowers are colorful additions to a garden. "They're all around here in the fall," he said.
  2. Make sure your garden gets sun: Because the air gets cooler in the fall, Sonnenschein said to make sure your garden is getting a little more sun than shade.
  3. Protect against deer: Sonnenschein recommended putting up a fence to keep deer and other animals away, but "if you can't put up a fence, spray a little bit of the DeerPro (spray)," he said.
  4. Plant perennials now: Sonnenschein said to put perennials in "no matter how poor they look now ... so you won't have to do as much work next spring." He added that the flowers are generally on sale this time of year, so you can also save money.
  5. Keep an eye on your plants: Be sure to deadhead and clip back anything that looks like it's dying, Sonnenschein said, and to "take a look at the soil" and water your garden more frequently if it starts to look dry in the heat of August.
