Westport Firefighter Returns From Afghanistan

Pete Nichio was deployed for over a year and had a symbolic and heartwarming homecoming.

Westport Fire Fighter Pete Nichio recently returned from a yearlong deployment in Afghanistan and upon his homecoming visited the department for a very special ceremony.

Nichio celebrated his return by taking down the “Blue Star Service Flag” which flew at headquarters each day during his time overseas. He will return to duty with the department immediately.

“I am overjoyed to be back with my family which includes the brotherhood of the Westport Fire Department,” said Nichio. “Lowering that flag marks a significant passage of time for the department.”

Nichio was greeted by his fellow firefighters, all of whom were ecstatic to see him back at headquarters.

“Looking up and seeing that flag reminded us of Pete on a daily basis and of the sacrifices he was making for us all,” said Chief Andrew Kingsbury. “We are blessed to have him home again.”
