WILTON, CT — Police have charged a Brooklyn man with assault and larceny after they say he got into an altercation with a manager at a local grocery store.

On Monday at 6:14 p.m. the Wilton Police Department responded to a call from the Stop & Shop at 5 River Road. The report said the manager had been assaulted by a customer in the store after he was told to leave, because it was believed he was using stolen credit cards to withdraw cash.

Officers found the suspect, Hakeem Britton, 19, of Brooklyn, NY, in the store's parking lot upon their arrival.

The victim told police that she observed Britton making multiple transactions using different debit cards and then receiving cash after each transaction. When the manager approached Britton and asked him to leave, she said Britton became verbally abusive. When she began to record him on a cell phone, she said the suspect assaulted her by slapping her face and pulling her hair, before another employee intervened.

Britton then left the store where he was apprehended by officers.

After some investigation, police say they found $1,400 on Britton's person, along with Stop & Shop receipts showing debit card transactions for single item purchases, each followed by a $200 cash back withdrawal.

The Wilton police took Britton into custody without incident and charged him with third-degree assault, fourth-degree larceny, first-degree criminal trespassing, illegal use of a payment card, and second-degree breach of peace.

Britton was released on $2,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in Stamford Superior Court on August 8.

Officials say that a second suspect was reported to be assisting Britton but was not located. They are urging anyone with information on this suspect contact the Wilton Police Department at 203-834-6260.
