WATCH: Trooper Strikes Deer At Highway Speeds In Connecticut

"You just might want to put your coffee down for this one," State police said when they released dash camera footage of the collision.

In an effort to educate the public about the dangers of deer on the roads, State Police released a shocking video of a state trooper striking a deer on a state highway. The dashboard camera footage was posted on the department's Facebook page Thursday, lasting about 30 seconds.

"You just might want to put your coffee down for this one," state police wrote on Facebook.

State Police spokeswoman Trooper Kelly Grant said the crash happened on Rte. 9, just before 11:30 p.m. on Nov. 6. It was not clear which town the trooper was in at the time of the crash.

The video shows a trooper driving at highway speeds, before a deer abruptly appears before it is too late. The trooper later pulled over slowly before the video ends.

State police used the video as an opportunity to tell residents what they should do in the event they hit a deer.
