I wanted to include my name (Ashley Flood), and thought it would be fun to do a play on words, and ended up with A. Flood of Paper. I then added the umbrella to the logo for a creative image of a flood.

Why choose that location? Why start a business in this town?

Formerly, I managed the Invitation Department at the Blue Tulip shop that was in Wilton Center. I loved my clients and wanted to continue working with them after the Blue Tulip closed. So, I started my own business and love having my studio in the town center.

Briefly, what business are you in?

Stationery and Invitations.

What’s the most difficult moment or challenge you’ve faced as a business owner?

The most difficult challenge I’ve faced is continuing regular shop hours with a newborn baby. I had my son in 2012 and for a full year, brought him to work with me. I’m so glad I kept my client base during this time, but it was definitely a challenge.

Were there any challenges that made you second guess your decision to be an entrepreneur?

I’ve always felt that my stationery business is the right path for my career and I’ve truly never wished I was doing something else.

What’s been your favorite moment or proudest achievement since opening?

My proudest moment was when I first received a letter in the mail letting me know that my clients voted my business as Best of the Gold Coast in Wedding Invitations/Stationery. I’ll never forget that excitement and appreciation I felt. That was in 2011 and since then I’ve won the award 3 more times!

What’s the most innovative idea your employees or customers have had that you put into practice?

One of my customers brought in her children’s artwork and asked me to print it on custom stationery. I loved how it turned out and still offer this option today. It’s so special and personalized.

How do you deal with difficult customers?

Anytime I’m dealing with a difficult person, whether it’s a customer or not, I always consider what that person might be going through. More often than not, I believe there is an underlying struggle that person is dealing with.

How does your business give back or get involved in the community?

A. Flood of Paper donates to several local charities and organizations. I love being a part of Wilton’s wonderful community.
